Always nice to match up wills and this is Richard the second son of William Watson Buller and Sarah Stert. His will was blogged earlier. This Richard was married to Felizarda Guilhermina and her surname is unknown. They had six children including three daughters and three sons.

Sir Peter Pole, Baronet, married Anna Guilhermina Buller 24 Dec 1798. She was the eldest daughter of Richard Buller, Esquire. They had eight children. She died 25 Jul 1835.

A second daughter Felizarda Matilda Buller was married to Charles Pole (brother of Sir Peter Pole).

The third daughter Marianna was married to the Reverend Henry Isham.

The oldest son appears to be Cornelius, second eldest is the Reverend Arthur, Clerk and Daniel is the youngest son although he appears to benefit little from the will.

An online website links this family back to the Buller family of Shillingham but I still haven't figured out the connection. There is just one Richard that is a possibility on the Visitation but it does not extend his information further than himself although it also does not show him to have died without issue. However the dates of birth for the two Richard entries do not agree. A mystery that is actually. Of course the other issue is whether or not all children are listed on the Visitation. By the wills that were written father to son it does appear that they are all mentioned but then one generation back there are several sons about whom nothing more has been written.

Is the Cornelius Buller Esquire who was Governor of the Bank of England 1824-1826 related to this testator? Looking at the deaths in Free BMD there was one Cornelius Buller who died Jun quarter 1849 (he was the Governor of the Bank of England as mentioned) in Kensington RD. and another death of Cornelius Buller Dec quarter 1880 and he was 77 years of age dying in Marylebone RD. This would be the son of the testator.

However there was a Cornelius Buller who was in business with Richard Buller and a third partner Hieroniman Berminster. Was Cornelius Buller a brother to Richard? Was Hieroniman Berminster a brother to the wife of Richard Buller namely Felizarda Guilhermina (surname unknown).  Cornelius Buller stepped back from becoming involved when the banking house of Pole was in trouble in 1825 because he was related (the deputy Governor took over that particular transaction). However Cornelius Buller is credited with preventing a complete collapse of the system. But how does this Cornelius Buller fit into the Buller family? Cornelius Buller was married to Mary Downe the daughter of Richard Down Esquire Banker of Bartholomews Lane in the City of London. The Will or Richard Down is in its entirety in the website below:

John Buller is on the 1841 census at 205 Tottenham Court Road as a Coffee House Keeper and he is 30 years of age not born in Middlesex. His wife was named Martha and she is listed as 40 years of age (remembering the rounding down/rounding up that the census takers were to do for adults on the 1841 census). She also was not born in the county of Middlesex. John Edward (son of John the testator) is seven years of age and born in Middlesex. Eliza Buller is also listed as 15 years of age and she was not born in Middlesex. They have quite a list of people with them including a waitress and a female servant. There are a number of individuals listed as well who are perhaps customers. This is too late to really discover anything about my 3x great grandfather but I do find it interesting especially that the testator is not born in Middlesex.

Will of Charlotte Roddam formerly Buller, Wife, Saint Marylebone, Middlesex - The National Archives PROB 11/956/117, probated 1 Mar 1770

This is Charlotte Buller the youngest daughter of William Watson Buller and his wife Sarah Stert. Her eldest sister Anna Maria married Henry Leaves Esquire. Charlotte was baptized 6 Aug 1738 so that by 1770 she would have been 32 years of age. The mention of Richard Stert and Henry Leaves Esquires as the Third part of the Indenture does add proof that this is Charlotte daughter of William Watson Buller.

In her father's will Charlotte was to receive two thousand pounds under her father's will. Charlotte Buller married Collingwood Roddam 21 Apr 1767 at Saint Mary, St Marylebone, London (M03524-2 Family Search). Sarah Jane Roddam was born 24 Mar 1768 and baptized 21 Apr 1768 at Saint Mary,St Marylebone, London (C03524-1 Family Search). Later wills will show that she inherited from her mother and her sister Sarah as well before her marriage.

Possibly the baptism of Collingwood Roddam was 28 Dec 1734 son of Edward Roddam of Ilderton, Northumberland, England.

Early death for a young woman just two years after the birth of her child who must also have died since she says she has no issue in the will.

John Buller testator died in 1834 at Oxford Market, Middlesex and my curiosity encouraged me to add this will to the Buller collection just in case. However, he mentions only his wife Margaret and his witnesses do not have the surname Buller so not overly helpful in my trek to find my 3x great grandfather Christopher Buller or any relatives of Christopher other than the known ones I already have (i.e. all of his children).

Will of Sarah Buller, Widow, Saint George Hanover Square, Middlesex - The National Archives PROB 11/829/178, probated 19 Apr 1757

This is the will of Sarah Buller (née Stert) the widow of William Watson Buller. This family is well represented in the wills of London and Middlesex for the Buller family. There is more mention of the eldest son James and I must admit to being curious about James and the possibility mentioned by his mother that he might marry. His father wrote him out of his will for the most part. The mother has left enough money to give him a small yearly pension. Charlotte has received another two thousand pounds from her mother giving her a total of four thousand from both of her parents. This was a sizeable amount at the time to then give to her husband in the earlier will of Charlotte Roddam formerly Buller.

Noble Wallwyn Pytts has been one of the witnesses of this will and he is the son of Elizabeth Noble and William Pytts. Elizabeth being the eldest daughter of John Noble and Margaret Walwyn and this family of Hertfordshire, England. Interesting the witnesses of wills on occasion. Noble was baptized 29 Apr 1722 at Kenderchurch, Hereford and thus is 35 years of age at the signing of this will. On The National Archives site under the archives of the Wallwyn family of Much Marcle, Herefordshire I did learn that John Noble was a mercer of London. This material is from the papers of Noble Wallwyn Pytts and found in the Herefordshire Record Office.

Elizabeth Watson Buller married Eman Walton 6 Apr 1758 at York, Yorkshire (according to the Kings Court, Holy Trinity database created by the LDS Film Number 1068426).

Another online resource is a set of Baptisms in Lisbon Portugal
http://isp.ans.com.au/~rampais/genelogy/india/indexes/lisframe.htm
which lists Sarah 1726, Lucy Caroline 1728, James 1731, Richard 1732, Elizabeth Watson 1734 and Sarah 1736.

Elizabeth Buller is the Testator. Perhaps her marriage is to George Buller 1794 at Stoke Newington, Middlesex (Society of Genealogists, Find My Past). Interesting to have a George Buller as this is quite a common forename in the Somerset Buller family.

Her sister Mary married John Douglas 14 Jun 1795 at All Saints Church, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. They baptized three children at Gainsborough: Thomas Douglas 9 Jul 1796 and 1 Dec 1797 and Eliza Douglas 12 Sep 1818.

Her sister Sarah married Isaac Mundy 17 Aug 1806 at All Saints Church, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. They baptized four children at Gainsborough: Thomas Munday 10 Feb 1810, Margaret Munday 24 Dec 1814 at Gainsborough, Elizabeth and Ann Munday 29 Jan 1820 at Gainsborough.

Her sister Ann married Abraham Evans 9 Feb 1800 at St James, Piccadilly, Middlesex. This was Marriage #39 and they were both of the parish and married by banns and they both signed the Parish Register and witnesses were Samuel Evans and Faney Evans.

Will of Prudence Buller, Spinster, St Andrew Holborn, Middlesex - The National Archives PROB 11/659/289, probated 26 Jun 1733

Possibly this is Prudence Buller the daughter of Edward and Mary Buller baptized 5 Aug 1691 at St Andrew Holborn, London (C01051-3 Family Search). Prudence appears to be the only child of this couple baptized at St Andrew Holborn and no other likely candidates elsewhere. Interestingly there was a Richard Buller paying Hearth Tax at Saint Andrew Holborne in 1666. Some later Buller families lived at St Andrew Holborn. But definitely this line appears to have daughtered out with Prudence.

I do find it rather interesting that in the 1700s there is another Buller family in St Andrew Holborn which is descendant of the Cornwall Buller family - coincidence or other. I do not know at the moment.

However, this will definitely brings the Edward Buller line to an end and if his father was Richard I should pursue this line at some point. Find my Past has the following records Richard Buller living in South Olave Hart Street and married to Helen Morris 17 Jan 1659. He was a merchant and they have a son John baptized 6 Nov 1660. A further comment in Boyd's Inhabitants of London 17 Dec 1670 Vice General Marriage Licence R.B. merchant widowed at 33 married to Anne Watson of Maddam Scott Kent spinster of 26 years of age. This gives me a date of birth for Richard of 1637.

Boyd's Records of London Inhabitants was then more thoroughly scoured. There is also a record for John Buller from 1679 at St Stephen Walbrook and he was an innkeeper with children John baptized 11 Jan 1680 and William baptized 4 Nov 1683.

Also a Robert Buller married to an Ellen King of St John Walbrook 25 Aug 1625 at All Hallows Honey Lane. He was a merchant taylor in 1625 of St John Walbrook but also it says he was of St Michael Pat Royal. His children Daniel baptized 18 Nov 1627, Michael baptized 8 March 1628 and Thomas baptized 26 Dec 1633.

Will of Anthony Buller, Tayler, Saint Martins in the Fields, Middlesex - The National Archives PROB 11/659/289, probated 25 Feb 1740/41

Anthony Buller (the testator) identifies his siblings Charles, Mathew and Thomasin (married to (unknown) Hancock). He is married to Margarett lately Hart formerly {unknown} and she has a son William Hart a Goldsmith in London. He is executor of the will. He is leaving 500 pounds to his siblings which was a substantial estate already and he left the remainder of his estate to his wife. Margaret is perhaps Margaret Tolleday married to John Hart 25 Aug 1698 at Saint Martin in the Fields. William Hart was baptized 13 Aug 1704 son of John and Margaret Hart at Saint Martin in the Fields and is perhaps the William mentioned in the will as Executor and son of Margaret wife of Anthony Buller.

Anthony Buller married Margaret Hart 25 Mar 1706 at Saint Martin in the Fields, Westminster (M00145-7 Family Search). They appear to have had one child a daughter Margaret baptized 11 Jul 1708 at St Martin in the Fields. I find this Buller to be most interesting as Henry Christopher Buller baptized some of his children at St Martin in the Fields in the 1840s. Looking at Family Search I also found a John Buller married to Martha Wyllett 30 Sep 1659 at St Martin in the Fields. There was an earlier baptism of a William Hart 30 Aug 1703 at St Andrew Holborn son of John Hart.

Interesting entry in British History online 8 Apr 1661 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Clerk of the Pipe for a lease to Francis Buller of the meadow or pasture and Buildings thereon lying in the precinct of the late disparked park of Kerrybullock, co. Cornwall, parcel of the manor of Stoke-Climsland; and of the parcel of underwood growing on the farm ground called Kerribullock Park; the lease to be for one life in reversion of John Buller and Anthony Buller at a fine of 20 l. and under the old rent of 8 l. 2 s. 0 d. and 12 l per annum de incremento, payable to the Receiver of the Duchy of Cornwall.

Anthony is a rather unusual forename in the Buller family thus far and this could merit further investigation; possibility of sons not mentioned on the Visitation.

WDYTYA - Who Do You Think You Are 2013 Conference in London, UK

My husband and I attended the WDYTYA 2013 Conference in London, UK the weekend before last. Marvelous time that we had at the Conference which included our helping out at the Guild of One Name Studies Table on the Friday and Saturday (Sunday wasn't quite so busy and they had plenty of helpers so we carried on with our looking around instead of helping). Whilst at the table I was visited by Blake researchers from London, UK which was really a wonderful happening. They had joined the Blake yDNA project earlier and said they would drop by so really pleased. Unfortunately I was doing mapping of surnames at the time so couldn't chat with them for more than a hello.

We did visit all the tables that we had planned on visiting. Edward acquired a book of early maps for his Norfolk area where his 2x great grandmother Mary Anne Abbs was born and raised. Mary Ann was about 14 years of age when her family emigrated from Aylmerton Norfolk to East Gwillimbury Ontario. She married John Link (record known to exist but not located) and they had nine children with the last being Alfred Link  born circa 1861 and Mary Ann buried at Falkland before July 1862 when John Link remarried. His great grandfather William Henry Link would have been just 10 to 11 years of age when his mother died. Amazingly the children were all boys and my husband has traced down most of the children.

I was equally fortunate in finding material to purchase that rather interested me. There were a few CDs that I wanted and a book on Hampshire Villages published by the Hampshire County Federation of Women's Institutes published in 2002. Still on our agenda in the future is a more intense visit to Hampshire and this book has charming short stories on the Villages that my ancestors from Hampshire lived in. The Wiltshire Family History Society had a number of published Baptisms/Burials available and I acquired the publications for Woodford, Milston and South Newton where my Rawlings, Dove, Lywood and other related families lived. Devon had a lot of material but surprisingly I have purchased a lot through the years so did not make any purchases there which rather surprised me! Mostly we just had a really good look around and chatted with people at the various Family History Society tables. We also visited the ISOGG table where I had meant to give a few hours of time but that didn't materialize. I kept getting lured away to other tables. Our last day we did attend a few lectures which were most interesting and  we would go again. The next time to attend more lectures. These onsite researchers can provide a depth to time periods that I hadn't really considered. I listened to one on early London researching that quite inspired me to follow through on my idea to try to find Christopher Buller at the LMA which I had planned to do.

We did meet up with my fourth cousin Edward Baker, his wife Marie and their daughter Joane at the Victoria and Albert Museum. We spent a lively two hours chatting about families but I appear to be the expert on Christopher Buller and his wife Mary Beard and really couldn't add anything at that time that I hadn't already shared with them. It was nice to meet with them though. He didn't look a bit like my Buller family but not surprising. I rather think he looks like the Horlock family that the Buller line he descends from married into.

On the Tuesday and Thursday of last week we went to the National Archives and spent the entire day there each of those days. We were able to view nearly thirty mediaeval documents and image them for future study. Some were for Edward's family lines plus he did some work for the 100th/99th Regiment of Foot. For myself I was looking primarily for Blake and Pincombe documents plus a couple of Rowcliffe documents to try to help me link that line back in the 1600s. By the end of this year I will be working principally on the Blake and Pincombe one name studies and the ancestry of our son in law which is French Canadian.

On the Wednesday we went to the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA). We could have walked there from our hotel but took the bus and then walked back visiting the Society of Genealogist's Library as well. I joined the Society of Genealogists at WDYTYA as I had planned to do. At the LMA I had just one object in mind which was to review the microfilm for St Olave Southwark for the time period 1758 to 1769. The burial registration/death date included gave an age for Christopher which placed his date of birth circa 1763. This Parish Register is not yet up on Ancestry. I thought perhaps it was difficult to read but actually was quite straightforward. I suspect it will be forthcoming. I did not find a baptism for Christopher Buller but did find a couple of Buller families baptizing their children in this time period at St Olave. One was the Henry Buller family and another the William Buller family. There wasn't a Christopher. Christopher as a forename did appear in the register but not very often perhaps as much as once or twice per year with occasional three to four times. That was my only pursuit at the LMA as the history of the Beard family back into the early 1600s does appear to be fairly straightforward. We moved on to the Society of Genealogists Library where I wished to view the material that had been stored there for the Pincombe/Pinkham one name study that preceded my taking it on. I was rewarded handsomely with a set of typewritten abstracts of wills for the Pincombe/Pinkham family produced prior to the bombing of the Exeter Record Office in WWII. I now have a more likely date for the death of my 4x great grandfather John Pincombe as a couple of John Pincombe died in the time period. Plus I have the abstract of his will which provided details that I could only surmise from his children's wills but now have concrete evidence albeit a transcript of an abstract but nonetheless more than I had before. I spent a short time reviewing the holdings of the Society and then we moved on to continue our walk towards the Temple Church which we also wanted to visit and were successful in doing so. I found that I had tears in my eyes viewing the devastation that was wrought on the  Church during the bombing of London in WWII. It is amazing that so much of London did survive the bombing but sad that so much was lost. It just seems so totally unfair that future generations of British Islanders lost so much of their history during the conflict of WWII.

On the Friday we were both nursing colds and decided to just take it easy all day although we did go out for a walk and picked up theatre tickets for "Kiss me Kate" at the Old Vic. This grand old theatre was packed full that evening and our seats were excellent. Our hotel was located just a couple of blocks away and following the performance we walked back to the Hotel down Waterloo Street. It was fairly busy with all the theatre attendees. Our hotel was located just 0.5 miles from Waterloo Station and hence just across the River from London and Westminster and we continued with our walks on Saturday and Sunday passing up our original timetable which was somewhat more ambitious with visits to various sites. I think we probably enjoyed that just as much as going to visit all the sites. Our minds were becomingly increasingly full of information and it was pleasant just to enjoy visiting items that we had passed up on our previous stays in London. We spent Sunday in Trafalgar Square looking around and as I stood at the foot of the National Gallery looking at Saint Martin in the Fields Church I thought about what it might have looked like when my Henry Christopher Buller and his wife Anne Welch attended Church here with their children which did not include my Edwin Denner Buller as he was born on their return to Birmingham in 1850. They do appear to have gone back and forth a great deal although quite a bit of the 1840s was spent in London where Henry ran a Pork Butcher shop.

Our trip home yesterday was long considering the day became 29 hours but we were greeted with no fresh snow and our laneway neatly plowed by our son in law. Now to get into all the images which we took at The National Archives. My fingers itch to get at the Blake Wills but will finish the Buller wills first and then proceed through the other hundred or so of my families before starting on the new set which is almost totally Blake. Once completed then I shall continue with the parish register work and the Civil Registration chart that I am working on Eventually I do hope to take the Blake families back from the Civil Registration and Census to the Parish Registers. It is an ambitious project and I will need to acquire many parish registers to accomplish it. I already have a lot of them plus they are coming up on Family Search as they scan their enormous collection.

Our next trip to the British Isles will be to look at the countryside of southern England and visit the Record Offices also East Anglia for Edward's Abbs families and his early dissenters came from these areas as well around London. Then up into the Midlands for a visit to the newly created Birmingham Library and then trips into Yorkshire and Cumberland. It is a massive undertaking that may be two trips but along the way we want to cruise the Rhine coming up from the Palatinate as Edward's ancestors did in the early 1700s and see the Battlefields of France/Belgium where so many of our Canadian soldiers gave their lives for the freedoms that we enjoy today. To do that in 2014 would be our desire as the commemoration of the war of 1914-1918 begins.

We also want to do some research in France looking for the birthplaces of the ancestors of our son in law. So I can see at least three more trips back and possibly four to look at the genealogical history of our families. Edward would love to visit the area in Germany (Mecklenberg-Strelitz) where his Schultz/Niemann/Dusing/Passow/Staffeld/Germer/Hagemann ancestors lived. His great grandparents Johann Friedrick Wilhelm Schultz (born 18 Mar 1833 at Schoenbeck, Brohm) and Wilhelmine Fredericka Johanna (aka Rachel) Niemann (born 15 Dec 1835 at Staven) were emigrants to North America.

Still on London time as it would be 10:38 a.m. but will probably get a couple more hours of sleep since it is only 5:38 a.m. here in Ottawa.

William Buller is the testator and he and his wife are about to go to the Island of Tobago in the West Indies. The Naval Chronicles (The Naval Chronicle, For 1815: Containing a General and Biographical History of The Royal Navy of the United Kingdom; with a variety of original papers on nautical subjects. Under the Guidance of Several Literary and Professional Men. Vol. XXXIV. (from July to December). London, Printed and published by and for Joyce Gold, 103, Shoe Lane) has an entry in Volume 34 (1815) listing the marriage of William Buller, Esquire, nephew of Admiral Sir Edward Buller Baronet, KCB to Euphemia, daughter of the late Henry Kent, Esquire, RN and niece of Vice-admiral John Hunter and this is under list of marriages (no place of marriage given but will check it out on Find My Past). A rather lucky find that lets me connect this William Buller back to Sir Edward Buller (his uncle). According to the visitation Sir Edward Buller of Trenant Park, an Admiral in the Navy, created a Baronet 3 Oct 1808 married Gertrude Van Cortlandt. Their only daughter was Anna Maria who married James Drummond Elphinstone and he assume the surname of Buller. Sir Edward had two brothers both of whom are listed as not having any heirs and this William does appear to be a nephew to Sir Edward by the will below and the item in The Naval Chronicles. The two brothers were John Buller MP for West LOOE who married Augusta Nixon and John died without heirs in 1807. The second brother was Henry Buller and he died in the East Indies also unmarried. He would be the likely brother with a son William and I do have a couple of wills with forename Henry who were in the Indies. Especially given that William and his wife went to the West Indies this may prove to be a rather interesting line to try and follow. There isn't a will for a Euphemia Buller unfortunately but will try to discover items searching on Google. The will was probated and the executors were Ford Brown and Brooking Soady with the Brown being interesting given the second name of Euphemia of Brown. As well William mentions his brother Captain Henry George Buller in the 88th Regiment of Foot.

William has not gone to West Indies in the navy. I am assuming that he has died in 1819 without issue. His will was the first Buller will which I transcribed. Since this is the 1800s though it does not apply to my Buller line which traces back to Christopher Buller born circa 1763.

A subscriber list of British Fiction, 1800-1829 lists the following: Vice Admiral John Hunter, Mrs. Henry Kent, Vice Admiral Sir Edward Buller, William Buller, Esquire, Mrs. Buller (directly under) and further down Ford Brown, esquire and Mrs. Brown. A rather interesting find on Google.

Perhaps these next wills labeled "Out of England" will help to determine more about William Buller's father.

Henry Buller Esquire, Bengal, appears to be the father of William Buller and Henry George Buller as they are mentioned in his will and that will be the next will to be transcribed. Sir Edward Buller does mention that Henry George Buller is the son of his brother Henry.

I am somewhat intrigued by this will as there is a companion will also by Henry Buller still to do. Sir Edward Buller did the probate of this will as Residuary Legatee. The probate states that John Buller outlived his brother Henry but was himself dead in 1809 at the time of probate. John Buller died in 1807 according to the Visitation which means that Henry died between 1792 when he wrote his will and 1807 when John died. The ages of the children in 1792 were less than 21 and in 1809 they would have been seventeen years older so possibly young adults. William Buller married in 1815 according to the Naval Chronicles (blogged yesterday). William Buller and Henry George Buller came back to England since William married there and Henry George Buller was in the army. Sir Edward does mention Henry George Buller (as the son of his brother Henry Buller) in his will but William Buller the other son has died. This is the first mention that the two boys are the sons of Henry Buller and it is in the will of Sir Edward Buller.

Will of James Buller, mariner, Macao, East Indies - The National Archives PROB 11/1166/279, probated 13 Jun 1788

The will of James Buller at Macao, East Indies is an interesting read. Life must have been very hard in these areas in this time period. No idea if Joseph Buller his natural son survived. He does name his father as the Reverend James Buller of Tytherington, Gloucestershire. From the Parish Registers of Gloucestershire in Thornbury there is a marriage of the Rev James Buller, MA to Jane Gummersall (married by license 5 Mar 1764 Family Search M05783-2). Thornbury district includes the parish of Tytherington. It is near Bristol.

Perhaps he is descendant of the Lillesdon Somerset Buller family so a most interesting find. Unfortunately his father has not left a will that was probated by the PCC. There are two wills at Tytherington in the Gloucestershire Archives. One is for an Elizabeth Buller and it was probated in 1831 and a second for a Jane Buller probated in 1800. Tempting to order the will by Jane Buller as she is perhaps the third wife of the Reverend James Buller mentioned in the will of his son.

Three births/baptisms were found to James and Jane Buller at Tytherington:

Robert Buller baptized 22 Feb 1767
Anna Buller baptized 4 Feb 1772
Polly Buller born 14 Aug 1769, baptized 17 Sep 1769

An interesting find in that the Buller family that remained at Lillesdon is not traced down at least I haven't found any trace of them although as I write this I realize I have never checked the Visitations for the Buller family in these areas.

This will for Henry Buller is similar to the preceding one blogged the day before yesterday. However there was a new admon granted and the details follow. The dates are somewhat confusing and will try to sort that out. There are some subtle differences in the will and some added copy in the margin which makes this will slightly different. It is perhaps the first will written although also carries the "word" copy at the top but this has been rewritten and is not in the original hand of Henry Buller. The year of death is stated in a letter from a William John Morgan as occurring on 1 January 1800 at sea off the Cape of Good Hope.

The reason for the second probate appears in the first probate. This will was not the original official copy of the will and probate was granted on the basis of looking only at his holdings in England with the proviso that at a later date when the will became available the remainder of the will would be executed. It was somewhat confusing because both entries carry the word "Copy" at the top.

The next set of wills are from Somerset and there are eight of them:

The first of the Somerset wills is for Edward Buller of Nettlecombe.

The next set of wills are from Somerset and there are eight of them:

Edward Buller, Gentleman, Nettlecombe, PROB 11/954/363, 19 Feb 1770
George Buller, Gentleman, Nether Stowey, PROB 11/1331/22, 1 Oct 1799
Jenkins Buller, Gentleman, Nether Stowey, PROB 11/1270/21, 8 Jan 1796
John Buller, Lillesdon, North Currie, PROB 11/79/212, 3 Mar 1592
Mary Buller, Spinster, Nether Stowey, PROB 11/1152/355, 31 May 1787
Sarah Buller, Widow, Hether Stowey, PROB 11/951/315, 2 Oct 1769
Thomas Buller, Gentleman, Staple Fitzpayne, PROB 11/51/16, 22 Jan 1569
William Buller, Soap Boiler, Nether Stowey, PROB 11/1137/59, 31 Jan 1786

Edward names his children John, Edward, William and Mary and his wife is also Mary. No sign of Christopher here so not my line but interesting none the less as he does not appear on any Visitation that I have looked at thus far.

Edward Buller married Mary Otway 13 Dec 1752 at Pitminster Somerset (Family Search I07999-7).

Baptisms of the children:

John Buller baptized 16 May 1753 at Nettlecombe
Edward Buller baptized 11 Sep 1755 at Nettlecombe
William Buller baptized 28 Dec 1758 at Nettlecombe
Mary Buller baptized 23 Feb 1763 at Nettlecombe

At probate his eldest son John was sixteen years of age, Edward was fourteen years of age, William was eleven years of age and Mary only seven years old.

No ideas on the parents of Edward Buller (testator) as he names his brother in law John Oatway as his other Executor and Guardian for his children. However, Pitminster marriages of 1718 list John Buller of Taunton marrying Mary Lock of Pitminster 19 Apr 1718.

An interesting write up for Seavington St Mary, Somerset in British History online:
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=117097

The Buller family, tenants from the 14th century, held meadow at the 'Farthyng' which they exchanged with their lord for similar property at 'Landemede' and elsewhere. (fn. 87)

The Bullers were successors to a number of substantial families which held small freeholds in the parish. Walter de Thornhull had an interest in a virgate in 1268; (fn. 88) the Brooks, lords Cobham, were there in 1505, (fn. 89) and the Seymours, in the persons of Sir John and Sir Edward Seymour, between 1528 and 1560. (fn. 90) Robert Buller (d. 1506) occupied a capital messuage in Seavington Vaux manor, (fn. 91) and John Buller held it at his death in 1592. (fn. 92)

Seavington St Mary being 14 miles SSE of Nettlecombe and 11 miles WNW of Pitminster. Lillesdon is considered the main property of the Buller family in Somerset and it is 8 miles NW or Seavington St Mary. Looking at the Visitation is this perhaps John Buller who married Elizabeth daughter of Sir Edward Strangwais?

Will of George Buller, Gentleman, Nether Stowey - The National Archives PROB 11/1331/22, probated 1 Oct 1799

George Buller the Testator is again likely a descendant of the Buller family at Lillesdon but no actual proof of that. He was buried 12 Jul 1799 at Nether Stowey. There is a marriage of George Buller of Stringston and Martha Govett of Stringston 15 Aug 1745 at Kilve. From the Genuki webpages for Stringston (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/Stringston/index.html) the vicarage is annexed to Kilve thus explaining why the marriage was at Kilve. Kilve is 2 miles WNW of Stringston and Nether Stowey is 3 miles SSE of Stringston. However, the baptisms that fit with the children in the will are to a George and Mary so suspect that this George Buller was married to Mary Morrish 16 Oct 1759 at Nether Stowey. Just interesting to see the name Govett in the will and then the earlier marriage. The marriage between George Buller and Mary Morrish was by license. However they are not the parents of Christopher at least no Christopher Buller is baptized as a son of George and Mary. Mind you he could have been married to both Martha and Mary as the marriages are 14 years apart. But the children named in the will were all baptized to George and Mary Buller (Sarah's baptism is missing). The marriage by license is interesting and not unusual when a widower or widow is remarrying.

By the mid 1600s Lillesdon is held by Edward Courte so the Buller family has moved away from Lillesdon. I will pull up the Buller names on the Protestation Returns for Somerset shortly to have a look at the places in which they were found in 1641/42.

This is an excellent will especially as the probate actually names the husbands of these daughters.

Lillesdon is in the Parish of North Curry. Lillesdon is 12 miles NW of Nether Stowey, 15 miles NW of Kilton and 19 miles WNW of Nettlecombe.

On the Martin Southwood transcriptions for West Somerset parish records (more below) (http://www.wsom.org.uk/Registers/NStyMar17501836.htm) I found:

Marriage of Thomas Newton (Crowcombe) and Martha Ann Buller 16 May 1798 at Nether Stowey.
Baptism of Jane daughter of Sarah Buller 9 Mar 1792.

The marriages for  William Alford and Mary Buller and  Robert Parker and Elizabeth Buller were at Kilton (as were those of their brothers George and John).

There are a number of Buller entries in the Parish Registers of Nether Stowey but an interesting item in British History on line in the Stringston area follows (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=18499)

An estate described in the 16th century as HOLWELL manor and perhaps before 1539 owned by Buckland priory came into the possession of Thomas Hill (d. 1565), and he sold part of it to Edward Jenkins (d. c. 1572). (fn. 47) Andrew Jenkins (d. 1593) held other land of George Hill, Thomas's son. (fn. 48) By the 17th century three separate holdings at Holwell may have derived from Hill's estate. One, later known as Nether, Lower, or Middle Holwell, was assigned in 1602 by John Malet and his wife Mary to John Colford, in succession to John Jenkins. (fn. 49) The Colfords, who are said to have held the land in chief by knight service, remained in possession until the later 17th century, but by 1710 had sold to George Buller. (fn. 50) George's great-nephew, also George Buller, sold it in 1789 to John Barrell, and John's son, also John, in 1857 conveyed it to the Revd. Henry Codrington. Henry conveyed it to trustees. (fn. 51).

I have decided to extract all the Buller entries from the online site for the West Somerset Parish Registers just to have a look at them and have them in one place for future reference as I am prone to thinking that Christopher Buller is descendant of this line especially having eliminated the Cornwall/Devon Buller families for the most part.

Jenkins Buller the testator is the son of Edward and Sarah Buller baptized 25 May 1732. Jenkins Buller buried 8 Oct 1794 (62 years of age). His parents were Mr Edward Buller married to Mrs Sarah Jenkins 12 Jun 1729 at Crowcombe (the Mr. and Mrs. denoting gentry). Their children were as follows:

Mary Buller daughter of Edward and Sarah baptized 2 Sep 1730
Jenkins Buller son of Edward and Sarah baptized 25 May 1732
Richard Buller son of Edward and Sarah baptized 17 May 1734; buried 3 Sep 1735
Richard Buller son of Edward and Sarah baptized 12 Jan 1737
Elizabeth Buller daughter of Edward and Sarah baptized 12 Jan 1737

Meandering through the Somerset Record Office Catalogue I found a document (DD\AH/2/5/1 (C/2270) Marriage Settlement between William Silke and Anne Buller and it states that Edward, Gregory and Anne Buller are all siblings (20 Jun 1732).

Richard Jenkins Poole was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth baptized 27 Dec 1770. Their daughter Sarah was baptized 17 Aug 1764. Thomas Poole and Elizabeth Buller were married 18 Jul 1763 and all of these services took place at Nether Stowey.  I did not find a marriage for his older sister Mary or his brother Richard.  There was a Mary Buller buried 23 Sep 1785 and several burials for a Richard Buller at Nether Stowey.

This particular family has daughtered out it would appear as Jenkins Buller has left no heirs and his brother Richard is not mentioned in the will. The nephew inheriting the largest part of the property is Richard Jenkins Poole which does perhaps tell the story. His father Thomas Poole was a tanner and he became quite prominent in Nether Stowey.

Is it possible to determine the parents of Edward Buller father of Jenkins and looking at the Nether Stowey Records :

Edward Buller son of Richard and Jane baptized 6 Jan 1691

appears to be the only Edward Buller baptized there. The father being Richard is interesting. Certainly Jenkins was named for his mother's family and then the naming of the second son as Richard could perhaps lead us back to Richard Buller and Jane Dyer married 6 Feb 1689. There were three Buller families in this time period at Nether Stowey - Richard and Jane; George and Sarah,  and Gregory and Jane. Were these three men brothers - no we know from the marriage agreement that only Edward and Gregory are brothers to Anne who married William Silke 13 Jul 1732 at Nether Stowey? The Visitation for the Buller family still does not come down far enough to link these men back to the Lillesdon Buller family. John Buller who married Elizabeth Rogers and died 12 Jan 1592 (there is an Inquisition Post Mortem which I may just look at the next time we are at Kew) which might assist but he is listed as having sons George (son and heir born circa 1549), John, Robert, Benjamin and Richard. There is still a gap of 50 plus years since Gregory, Richard and George would likely have been born between 1660 and 1670 or earlier so not likely the sons of the above mentioned five brothers. Plus there are other lines coming down on the Visitation that do not extend as far as this particular one. One can see my dilemma as to which line my Christopher Buller belongs or was he descendant of the Warwickshire Buller family?

An interesting set of wills that is not exactly answering my question but does point out that the Buller family of Liddesdon other than Alexander Buller who moved to Cornwall has not been investigated to any great degree.

Children of these three couples baptized at Nether Stowey:
John Buller son of Gregory and Jane baptized 9 Jul 1690
Edward Buller son of Richard and Jane baptized 6 Jan 1691
Thomasin Buller daughter of Gregory and Jane baptized 12 May 1692
Sarah Buller daughter of Richard and Jane baptized 17 Nov 1692
Gregory Buller son of Gregory and Jane baptized 6 Jun 1694
Richard Buller son of Richard and Jane baptized 20 Dec 1694
George Buller son of George and Sarah baptized 22 Aug 1695
Elizabeth Buller daughter of Gregory and Jane baptized 26 Oct 1696
Jane Buller daughter of Richard and Jane baptized 3 Oct 1697
Richard Buller son of Gregory and Jane baptized 18 Aug 1698
Jane Buller daughter of Gregory and Jane baptized 24 Jan 1700
Anne Buller daughter of Richard and Jane baptized 8 May 1701
Sarah Buller daughter of Gregory and Jane baptized 22 Jul 1702
James Buller son of Gregory and Jane baptized 27 Jul 1704
Constance Buller daughter of Richard and Jane baptized 28 Mar 1705

An interesting entry in the marriage register at Nether Stowey:

Richard Bullar and Thomasine Gogan of Chedsey married 5 Oct 1654

and one of the daughters of Gregory is named Thomasine.

Will of John Buller the elder of North Curry, Somerset, Esquire - The National Archives PROB 11/79/212, probated 3 Mar 1591/92

This will of John Buller the elder of Lillesdon probated in 1591/92 really needs the Inquisition Postmortem to make sense of it. However, he does identify his sons John and George. Missing are his other three sons - Robert, Benjamin and Richard (only four of these sons are mentioned in the Inquisition but Robert is on the Visitation). According to the Visitation George was 43 years of age  and said to be the eldest. However, John was the Executor of the will which is usually the eldest but not always. George then was born circa 1548/49 and if the eldest the rest may have been all born by about 1560 or thereabouts. No guardians are named in this will so all are over 21 presumably. His wife is not named and she was Elizabeth Rogers daughter of Sir John Rogers Knight. This John was born posthumously probably in 1529 or 1530 making him 62/62 years of age at his death. His father John was 24 or more at his father's death in 1526 (his father was Alexander Buller and his mother was the first wife of Alexander Ann daughter of Giles Lo. Danbury. He died just three years after his father Alexander and his wife Dorothy daughter of St John Kellaway Knight married into the Lyte family.

If I ever bridge the gap between this John, the testator and his sons to the Buller family at Nether Stowey then I will acquire the Inquisition Postmortem.

There is a will probated (but  not at Canterbury) written by a John Buller of North Curry, Somerset and Admon given 25 Oct 1599 to Humphry Arundell of Lillesdon, Somerset, Gent during the minority of Johane, John, Nicholas, Ann, and Edward Buller children of the deceased with consent of Johan Buller, relict, Nicholas Wadham, Esquire and Edward Seymor, Esquire, nearest of kin. This is from the Abstracts of Somersetshire wills produced by Frederick Brown. (http://www.westcountrygenealogy.com/directories/abstracts-somerset-wills-1.htm)

Is this the son John (probate 25 Oct 1599 - paragraph above) who probated his father John's will (present testator)? Hard to predict the ages of his children without the parish registers of Lillesdon or some other information. However he has left underage children as he mentions that they are in their minority so born after 1580. This is my first clue for Buller descendants of the Lillesdon family living likely into the 1600s since they would be less than 21 in 1599. This is perhaps one of the wills lost at Exeter during the bombing.

There is also an abstract of the will of Alexander Buller Esquire of Wood, Somerset. Diocese of Bath and Wells. Will dated and proved, 1526. To be buried at Knoll. My father in law John Horsey the elder. My brother John Horsey. My wife Elizabeth. John Buller my son and heir.

Unfortunately Alexander's will was likely lost in the bombing of the Exeter Record Office during WWII.

Looking at the Visitation of Cumberland for the Buller family:

Alexander is the grandfather of John Buller the elder of Lillesdon whose will was probated 1592 (present testator). Alexander's eldest son John was by his first wife Ann daughter of Giles Lo. Dawbrey and he was 24 when his father died in 1526 and John himself died in 1529. This will I have not yet obtained. The present testator was the posthumous child of the John Buller (son of Alexander) who died in 1529. Although Alexander was the father of Richard (second son) who married Margaret Trethersse of Cornwall (widow of Edward Courtney), he was not aware at his death that his son would carry the line to fame and fortune!

This will is for Mary the eldest daughter of Edward and Sarah Buller and sister to Jenkins Buller. She names her sister Elizabeth Poole as Executrix. Legacies were given to her niece Sarah Poole and her nephews Thomas Poole and Richard Jenkins Poole. She has an annuity for her brother Jenkins Buller. The tone of the will is interesting and leaves one to only guess at the life style of Jenkins Buller having already transcribed his will and noted his debts. Interesting that the sum of money that must be paid for his lands by Sarah Poole matches the legacy given her by her Aunt Mary Buller.

I find it very interesting the way that land has been given to every child of Edward Buller and Sarah Jenkins. Presumably Richard Buller (their son) has died young as he is not mentioned in any will. The next will is that of Sarah Buller (widow of Edward). Definitely this line is not mine since Jenkins has died without any mention of children and the time frame overlaps that of my Christopher Buller.

There remains 14 more wills for the Buller family. Two more following that of Sarah above in Somerset, four in Surrey, one in Sussex and six in Warwickshire. There are another eight or nine miscellaneous wills that pertain or are for the Buller family and then my foray into the Buller family records will be complete for the moment. I hope to finish in the next two weeks.

Then back to Blake and the newsletter to be produced for 1 April 2013. It will deal with my time at Who Do You Think You Are Conference in London and my look at the Calendar of Patent Rolls. I was able to look at several of the original documents that made up this set of rolls.

Following that I will return once again to the wills that I collected earlier for other lines of my family (120 still to do). I wish to complete them before beginning on the new material that we imaged at Kew this time. Mind you the desire to return to the Blake material may be so strong that it derails my thought!

This will is that of Sarah Buller (widow of Edward). Definitely this line is not mine since Jenkins has died without any mention of children and the time frame overlaps that of my Christopher Buller. I need to do more research on the line of his brother Gregory and that of George also at Nether Stowey. But that will wait for a later date. The witnesses W. Buller and Jane Buller are interesting and I should pursue that at a later date. But again this will is in the time frame of the birth of Christopher Buller and so my process forward through the Buller wills continues and probably it would even if I find Christopher since I do have them and they will likely be interesting to someone else reading this blog. Amazing to think I created it as my "corporate" memory to be able to look back and see what I worked on and my thoughts with regard to particular family lines.

Once I have completed all of these current wills then I will start to do my calendar of names once again so that I work on each of my surnames in turn on a daily basis. I will only spend about an hour on these individual names (research plan to be prepared as part of the time). I will also look at one French Canadian surname of our son in law once a day using the same criteria.
