Living DNA

When I purchased the two kits for Living DNA (one for my older brother and one for myself), I only hoped to achieve a look at our results against a study of British DNA. I was and am very pleased with those results which have not changed in the years since we first tested. I am hopeful that the new initiative that Find My Past is undertaking with tree matching on their site is part of Living DNAs effort to do matching within the DNA projects that they have completed plus what has been uploaded to their site. Breaking into a new field is always difficult and going slow is better than being haphazard. There are lots of matching databases these days and we can only benefit from being patient and waiting to see what can come out of Living DNAs new initiative with regard to matching.

I wish them every success in their venture especially given that all of my known relatives were born, married and died in England with just a few of my ancestors being born and/or marrying/dying in Canada - my father and his parents, my mother, my maternal grandparents, my maternal grandfather's parents and my maternal grandfather's mother's parents. All the rest were born in, lived their entire life in and died in five different areas of England. I have just one Canadian line in terms of being born here (including myself) - my mother, her father and his mother.

I have uploaded the results for two of my other siblings to Living DNA and we are a matching block in their beta tree. I would be quite surprised to have matches at this stage of their matching as we do not have any first cousins, none of my second cousins have tested and any of my third cousins who have tested have not done so at Living DNA to my knowledge.

My husband also tested at Living DNA and does have a match with a known fourth cousin in his beta tree.

Patience will bring interesting results I am convinced of that.

Extradition

Does China know that if we had an extradition treaty with them that we would also arrest someone that they asked us to arrest? This isn't us knuckling under to the United States; we are simply following the Rule of Law that has kept us all good friends especially the last 74 years since World War II ended.

Occasionally the political world enters into my thinking and I wonder if some problems could be solved easily.

China maintains extradition treaties with 40 nations.

Belarus, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, France, Laos, Mongolia, Lithuania, Peru, Russia, The Philippines, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea, Romania, Spain, Thailand, Tunisia, The United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter

I am working on the Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter. Lately I received an offer for a couple of y DNA tests to give away but I am reluctant to do other than pass on the name of the individual who is willing to make these tests available. There are simply not enough people tested in the yDNA line to make any particular claims. I would suggest that individuals of the Pinkham family should test and in the line of the individual offering the opportunity.

The yDNA testing for my Pincombe line at Bishops Nymptom into the 1900s and dating back to the late 1590s at Bishops Nympton in the Parish Registers has been proven back to John Pincombe (baptized 13 Feb 1728 at Bishops Nympton son of John Pincombe and Grace Manning married 20 Mar 1725 at Bishops Nympton). Likely this line goes back to North Molton with Richard Pincombe (found at Bishops Nympton in his adult years) likely being the fourth son of William Pincombe and Emotte Snow who lived at East Buckland and likely born at North Molton. My third cousin has tested for our line and he matches a fifth cousin who lives/lived in Australia and descendant of one of the other sons of John Pincombe and Mary Charley with this John Pincombe having been baptized 13 Feb 1728 at Bishops Nympton. A further match with these two has ancestry at Barnstaple and there is family lore that descendants of the Pincombe Family at South Molton (known to be related to the Pincombe family at North Molton) did move to Barnstaple in the 1500s.

I think that the yDNA study will likely wait for another generation of Pincombe-Pinkham testers. I have asked a few Pincombes known to me to test but they do not wish to do so at this time. Curiosity tends to be the driving force in DNA and we just have to wait for that curiosity to catch up to our study.

Hope the Newsletter by the end of the weekend. Gardening takes up so much time these days but soon everything will be planted. It is still cool here in Ottawa and the ground too wet to dig for the main garden although this weekend may prove to be a good drying one although rain is promised!

1.    Pincombe Charts, original One-Name Study at the Guild of One-Name Studies
These Pincombe Charts were created by the two researchers in the original One-name-study at the Guild of one-name-studies. I reprint them with the thought in mind that others could add to the knowledge of these charts. I have reworked some of them and will publish that information when complete. I am publishing the Chart 11 for Barnstaple in this issue of the Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter.

The link for the original chart (image below):
http://www.kipp-blake-families.ca/Chart11.jpg

Any information on any of these lines is most welcome and if you wish to write up an article on the family at Barnstaple it would be interesting to understand more about this line of the family. More work is needed on this chart to verify the entries and add new information.

The top of the pedigree chart at Barnstaple has John Pinckcombe who married 13 Jun 1594 Jane Sherman at Barnstaple. I have not seen an original image for this particular record and it is found in England Marriages 1538-1973 and I checked it at Find My Past. Also found on find my past a Port Record for a John Pyncombe, Merchant, 03 Nov 1595 and the vessel was Phenix (30 Tons) and registered at Northam with Barnstaple being the Administrative Port. John Pyncombe was bringing in Rochell wine from La Rochelle, France (archival reference E190/936/13 from the Customs Port Book for Devon. There are several of these records in 1595 for John Pyncombe as the merchant listed receiving the particular goods. Is this the same John Pinckcombe who married in 1594 at Barnstaple? I have not yet purchased the fiche for Barnstaple but would do that in the future perhaps. I tended to concentrate in the Bishops Nympton/North Molton/South Molton/Rose Ash/Landkey area looking for my Pincombe families initially. As the Pincombe one-name study grew I extracted a lot of material from Find My Past and photographed over 500 documents at Kew which I hope to transcribe and put into this newsletter once I have completed the wills.

I do not find a burial registration in 1616 for a John Pincombe on Find My Past or Family Search. I did find on Find My Past at Barnstaple the baptisms of Agnes Pinckombe 22 Jul 1599, Alse Pinckcombe 11 Jan 1602/3 and Rawlin Pinkcombe 27 Apr 1605 with father noted as John Pinkcombe in all baptisms (database England Births and Baptisms 1538-1975 not the original parish register). The baptism for Christopher is mentioned as South Molton in 1603, for Abraham 1595 at Roborough and for Henrie 1597 no place is listed.  Not all the records have been transcribed in the earlier time period for the various places mentioned.

Located directly below John Pinckombe and Jane Sherman and their children is Hugh Pincombe and his wife Sarah. This line is known to me and there is a mention of Landkey where they lived. Hugh Pincombe was one of the children of John Pincombe and Johann Blackmore who married 25 Sep 1655 at Bishops Nympton. This couple were likely my 7x great grandparents. Hugh was a younger brother to my ancestor William Pincombe who married Mary Vicary at Bishops Nympton. Hugh was the youngest child and youngest son in this family and is found at Landkey from 1687 till his death there in 1731. I have not been able to locate his marriage thus far. I have exactly the same information as appears on this chart plus some extra. This family should be excluded from the Barnstaple chart and included on the Bishops Nympton Chart.

Richard Pinkcombe (baptized 27 Mar 1585, died 1665) married to Mary Russell 23 Apr 1618 at Bideford is found to the left of John Pinckombe and Jane Sherman. According to Family Search the father of this Richard was Phillippe Pyncombe. I was not able to verify all of the information included on the chart but as the records for Bideford/Barnstaple become available on line these records could be verified.
On the right hand side of the chart beside John Pinckombe and Jane Sherman is listed William Pinckombe (died 1671) married to Wilmot Causy 1609 at Swimbridge. Their children are listed as John 1610, William 1611, William 1613 and Johane 1616. I was not able to verify any of these records although once again as these parish records come online at Family Search it would be easier to do the verification.

Acknowledgements were made to Patrick John Pincombe of Cheltenham. Tracing his line back on the chart we come to Abraham Pincombe whose parents are listed as John Pincombe (born/baptized 28 Aug 1728) and Elizabeth. This is a continuation from Chart 4 with Chart 4 being the Pincombe family of Beaford-Roborough-Great Torrington. Again I can not commit to any of these charts because I did not produce them. The records that are/were available to the researchers and the acknowledged donors of material are not available to me here in Canada. See Chart 4 which was discussed in Volume 3, Issue 2 of the Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter.
These tables represent many years of work at the record offices by the two original Pincombe-Pinkham family researchers and Richard Pinkham was a physician and able to make contact with some of the Pincombe families living in Devon. The names seen on these charts usually in the top corners are individuals who provided information for that particular chart. In the case of charts from the United States, Galen Pinkham has contributed a great deal of information to the descendants of the Pincombe/Pinkham family and this information can be found on the charts which he produced. I do remind other researchers that there are discrepancies in these charts and I would appreciate knowing of any that you may find so that eventually a corrected chart will be published.

Thomas Pincombe in his will above mentions the property known as Molland Sarazin. The first mention I have thus far for this property was the will of William Pincombe probated in 1604 and is transcribed in Volume 1 Issue 3 of the Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter. Finding this particular will helped me to link William and his seven sons downward with the parish registers in the various areas where his sons lived and his subsequent descendants. William’s will mentions:

“........ Item whereas I have and houlde by the demise and grannte of John Davy
gentleman deceased to me my executor and assignes for terme of Fourescore and nyneteene yeares fullie

Thomas does not mention in his will either of his two brothers, Richard is known to be deceased in 1648 at Bishops Nympton and Symon is not found in the records thus far. He is said to be out of the Realm of England in this will. With the father known as William and this will mentioning all of the children and grandchildren born by 1602 it is possible to build a good family tree for this line. I will say though that transcribing this will was a lengthy task at the time I first did so. The 1620 Visitation of Devon  with additions was partially helpful in that I could see where these individuals were placed in that Visitation by the time I had transcribed the several wills belonging to these close family members.

The Richard mentioned in William’s will was my likely 9x great grandfather and William also mentions Richard’s son William my likely 8x great grandfather. Richard was buried at Bishops Nympton 31 Jan 1648. His year of birth is not known although the North Molton parish registers commence in 1539. But it is believed that Thomas lived at East Buckland and Filleigh as did his son William. I have not yet acquired the records for East Buckland or Filleigh but the East Buckland parish records begin in 1684 and the Bishops Transcripts in 1597 and the Filleigh Parish Records begin in 1685 and the Bishops transcripts in 1608. Neither of these particular sets of records will assist with looking at this family in this area. Hence I must use the Visitations and Wills to put this family together until I have transcribed the other material that I collected. Portions of this family can be found on the Bishops Nympton chart and the North Molton chart and I have discussed that in several issues. Unfortunately my uncle chose not to assist the earlier researchers when they called him many years ago. My family line is incorrect in the charts but the bonus is that I became inspired to take on the Pincombe one-name study and hope to keep this up for quite a while yet! I also believe though that this call stirred an interest in my mother who about the same time started going to the Family History Library pulling out information on her Pincombe family line which was handy for me as I worked my way back. In her case she had family lore which helped her to place some of these people in the records that she found. Chatting with her in the late 1980s when my husband was creating a Family History Book for my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary, I remembered that she appeared to know the line back into the 1720s at Bishops Nympton (this had been recorded by her in her hand). This is always a sticky point for me because I knew the line back to the 1770s without a doubt primarily because of yDNA studies and the wills available to me but there wasn’t an existing will at that time to my knowledge although I would later discover that the earlier researchers had taken transcripts of a number of the Pincombe wills before the bombing of the Exeter Record Office which were deposited at the Society of Genealogists. In 2013 I visited their library (I was a member at the time and continue a member). Family lore when I was a child placed some Pincombe members in Australia although no correspondence occurred between the lines to my knowledge.
In the 1830s my 2x great grandfather John Pincombe was located at Lower Gatcombe in Molland which I have always found to be quite interesting. He received the leasehold from his Uncle John to the best of my knowledge and it would appear that the property was always to pass to a John Pincombe. However that needs to be verified and I may have the necessary documents in my treasure trove from the Archives when we photographed over 2000 documents in 2013.

The implication in the Visitation is that the father of William who left his will dated 1602 and probated in 1604 was Thomas and that he was the son of the Pyncombe who accompanied Lord de la Zouch to North Molton following the Battle of Bosworth Field (this idea was created on the basis of the Visitation and the wills). Lord de la Zouch was attainted  for supporting Richard the III and presumably those who came with him shared the same banishment from any lands or holdings that they may have had. William who left his will in 1602/probated in 1604 would have been elderly – all of his children were capable of receiving their inheritances so over 21 years of age. If he married at a young age, say 20, and each of his children were born at least one year apart and he names nine children then the youngest may have been born when he was 30 and hence he had to be at least 51 years of age in 1602. That gives him a year of birth in the mid 1500s. His likely father Thomas left his will in 1544 (unfortunately destroyed in the bombing of the Exeter Record Office during the Second World War) so he was born at least by the early to mid 1540s. If his father was born in the latter part of the 1400s (his father had arrived at least by 1485 at North Molton) then this all works well in terms of generations since saying ten years for nine children was likely on the short side; perhaps closer to 15 or even 20 years.

Unfortunately the Visitation only mentions three of the sons of William the testator in 1602 (eldest John, second William and fourth Richard) with the others being Symon (third), Thomas (fifth), Lewis (sixth) and Peter (seventh). His two daughters are named Johane and Katherin but birth order is unknown.

Going back to Volume 1 Issue 3 with the will of William and using the Visitation of Devon 1620 we can see that William Pincombe was the son of Thomas and Johane Pencombe. Johane Pencombe’s will was not lost but can be found in Volume 1 Issue 2 of the Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter. Joane mentions that she is a widow living at East Buckland. Her sons Richard Pencombe (and his son not named), her daughter married to John Locke, her son John Pencombe (and his daughter not named), her daughter married to John Jasse (and their son John Jasse the younger) and her eldest son William Pencombe one might assume as he is named executor although no children are mentioned for William. Joane Pencombe’s will is dated 7 May 1563 with probate completed 23 Oct 1590. Her date of death is not known to me but her husband died by 1544 although I do not think he was elderly at the time of his death. In 1563 when this will was written her son William is listed as having just one daughter and in total seven sons and two daughters are known from his will in 1602.

The current will under discussion for Thomas Pincombe dated 1651 includes a good deal of genealogical information as well. His parents were William Pincombe and Emotte Snow as determined from the Devon Visitation and the will. He was the fifth son as it appears that the sons are named in birth order in the will. Symon, Richard and Thomas are named as the heirs to the property known as Over Mollande Sarazin. At the time of Thomas’ will being written in 1563 Richard has died at Bishops Nympton (buried 31 Jan 1648). Symon does not appear in the records so Thomas is passing on this property as his own only since that was the criteria by which it was passed to him. He names his sons Thomas who will inherit Dobs Downe which is part of the Bartine of Molland Sarizine, Bartholomewe who will inherit the Bartine of Molland Sarizine (the present wife of Bartholomewe is Johane and he has two daughters Franncis  and Rechord by his first wife Frances). The wife of Thomas is Johane and they have five sons William, Thomas, John, Richard and Robert. Thomas also names his daughter Grace Hannanerd with husband Richard and daughter Katherine.

Looking at the parish records for North Molton:

This first baptism is likely Thomas mentioned son of the testator with the next five being the sons of Thomas and his wife Johane/Joan. All of these children are born before 1653.
Pincombe    Thomas    son    Pincombe    Thomas            1616    Mar    30
Pincombe    William    son    Pincombe    Thomas        Joan    1639    Mar    31

Pincombe    Robart    son    Pincombe    Thomas        Joan    1648    Jan    21

The next item is the daughter of Bartholomew and his first wife Frances.
Pincombe    Frances    daughter    Pincome    Bartholomew        Frances    1647    Dec    12

The following item is the daughter of Bartholomew and his second wife Joan.
Pincombe    Richorde    daughter    Pincombe    Bartholomew        Joan    1649    Feb    19
Then this record is the son of Bartholomew and Joane born after the will was written.
Pincombe    John    son    Pincombe    Bartholomew        Joane    1654    Nov    27

Again all the dates of baptism are prior to the date of the will/probate except for the son of Bartholomew who is not mentioned in the will.

There are more records likely for the grandchildren of the testator and another time I will work on those records to fit them in. I have several hundred documents on the Pincombe family in Devon that I need to transcribe. They will assist with putting these families together. I am somewhat comfortable with the line that I have put together going back for my line but these documents will help to prove (or disprove as there can always be surprises!) that and provide details on the many Pincombe families that descended from the seven sons of William Pincombe and Emotte Snowe.

3.    yDNA testing for Pinkham descendants
One of the members of the yDNA study has purchased two kits which he is willing to donate to a male candidate who has a paper trail going back four generations. I think that finding a Pinkham descendant would be the best candidate but will leave that up to the purchaser. Please contact the editor (kippeeb@rogers.com) for more details.

My third cousin has tested for our line and he matches a fifth cousin and descendant of one of the other sons of John Pincombe and Mary Charley with this John Pincombe having been baptized 13 Feb 1728 at Bishops Nympton. A further match with these two has ancestry at Barnstaple and there is family lore that descendants of the Pincombe Family at South Molton (known to be related to the Pincombe family at North Molton) did move to Barnstaple in the 1500s. If a paper trail can be established then the line would be verified back to William Pincombe who left his will dated 1602.

4.    North Molton Parish Records (Part 12)

These baptismal records are transcribed from the fiche of the original Parish Records for North Molton, Devon. I have changed the orientation of the newsletter to make it easier to publish the transcriptions for North Molton directly from my Excel file.

Cheatle Family

A new match that I am working on is making me wonder about my Cheatle family at Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire. I looked into the Cheatle family several years ago and corresponded with known descendants of other Cheatle families with ancestry back to Ashby de la Zouch who still live in England.

Then a couple of new matches appeared (one of which is 84 cM over 3 chromosomes including X with a 20 cM match) and a mention of the Chadborne family with several of them. One of my brothers also has an X chromosome match (15 cM) with this tester.  I found a birth on the GRO UK website, Josiah Chadbourne with mother's surname Cheatle Sep quarter 1839 at Birmingham, Warwickshire. Searching on Family Search I located the marriage of Elizabeth Cheatle and Samuel Chadbourne 26 July 1825 at Ashby de la Zouch with witnesses Wm Cheatle and Sarah Thomas. Elizabeth was 21 years of age at the time of her marriage but that was probably meant to clarify that she was an adult and not specific to her birth year. Unfortunately the signature of Wm Cheatle on this marriage license did not match the signature for my Wm Cheatle on the marriage license for my Sarah Cheatle seven years earlier but it could be a brother rather than a father I am contemplating. I found births for an Elizabeth Cheatle at Ashby de la Zouch:

Elizabeth Cheatle born 14 Sep 1794, father George Cheatle

Elizabeth Cheatle baptized 19 Apr 1801, parents William and Elizabeth Cheatle

Elizabeth Cheatle baptized 22 Aug 1802, parents Benjamin and Catherine Cheatle

Elizabeth Cheatle baptized 9 Jun 1802, parents William and Ann Cheatle

Looking at these Cheatle marriages at Ashby de la Zouch:

Benjamin Cheatle married Catherine Adams 28 Apr 1788

William Cheatle married Elizabeth Sherwin 6 Mar 1786

And other places:

William Cheatle married Ann Brookes 7 Oct 1796 at Ratby, Leicestershire

My Sarah Cheatle was bapized 17 Jan 1795 at Ashby de la Zouch daughter of William and Sarah Cheatle. Although Ratby is about ten miles from Ashby de la Zouch, it is not really that far and on the main road. Is it remotely possible that Sarah's mother died and her father remarried?

One of the matches has a tree online at Ancestry showing Josiah Chadbourne born at Birmingham with mother Elizabeth. I have now sent this new information to the tester (he also tested at 23 and Me). This would be most interesting as connecting the Cheatle family in Ashby de la Zouch has been quite a challenge.

Writing to me about the Blake Study

I, of course, welcome all emails to me both from the Guild Website and to my personal email account. If I do not respond in a timely fashion then please do write to me again. I publish three different newsletters so at any one time I am preparing for the next issue of one of them (Blake Newsletter now in its 8th volume, Pincombe-Pinkham Newsletter now in its 4th volume and the H11 Newsletter now in its 3rd volume). I also do transcription and paper research which takes up a great deal of my time.

I would like to mention though that for this study I do not do any present day research for others. If you have a query where you want me to look at your ancestry then I would need you to have the preliminary research back to your grandparents and given that it is now 2019 and a new generation is born since I started doing genealogy in 2003 then your great grandparents. The Blake charts that have been created by others and sent to me and those that I have created myself need you to have gotten back into the mid 1800s. Even with that knowledge, I probably can not help you unless you are related to me and the best approach is to do an autosomal DNA test and see the Blake matches within your matches or a yDNA study at FT DNA and join the Blake project. With that information in hand I will look at your information and see if it overlaps with anything that I have on hand. Telling me that your father/grandfather born in 1945 was a Blake doesn't go very far unfortunately. Family Lore can be helpful but an awful lot of people think they are descendant of the family that Robert Blake, Lord High Admiral is descendant (namely the Blake family in Somerset); others believe that they descend from the ancient Blake family at Calne Wiltshire. In the yline my family does not descend from either of these two lines and fortunately my grandfather clearly stated that. His family was from Andover forever he said and interestingly enough his yDNA (my brothers tested) points to an ancient British line known as the Deer People who inhabited Britain 8000 years ago. Hence the surname, like every surname indeed, was acquired. England did not have surnames before the coming of the Normans in 1066 and the following is information I found after this time:

There has been a lot of family lore about the Blake family in the United Kingdom with respect to their origins. In my blog on "Calendar of Patent Rolls - Summary of Blake entries (http://kippeeb.blogspot.ca/2013/01/calendar-of-patent-rolls-summary-of.html)" I have written up my findings when I extracted the Blake/Blak/le Blake/le Blak surname from these early records which are from the reigns of Henry III (1216-1272) right through to the reign of Henry VI (1422-1462). In all I found 210 items that dealt with the Blake family. The earliest document for a William le Blake was from 30 Jan 1230 and involved a land dispute. The next item was from 1274 for a Richard le Blak a merchant listed as being of Rouen (then the was capital of Normandy).  An amazing find considering the Blake Pedigree Chart which is held by the Swindon and Wiltshire Record Office. The furtherest back listed member of the Blake Pedigree Chart was a Richard Blake/Blaake/Blague living in the time of Edward I and Edward II and deeding property in Essex to the Knights Templar. Although I also discovered that this is an error and that the actual Blake member deeding property in Essex was a Roger Blake from Herefordshire, none the less this very early record does give one pause for thought.

But one does note that these early Blake records are beginning in the 1200s and the Normans arrived in 1066.

A number of the entries do bear the continental origin of the individual.

If you have a lengthy tree which you are willing to share then I am very pleased to add it to the repository of trees.

I am always looking for other like minded people to join me in this study. Since I am nearly 74 years of age I will step down one of these days and having someone eager to take up the mantle is an exciting thought. I intend that access to my information will be online for a good period of time after I step down.

Doldrums

I am into this doldrum; there is so much work to do in the garden and cleaning the house so that my time at the computer is broken up quite a bit. I need to decide what I should be accomplishing in between publishing my newsletters. The Newsletters were a good idea as they let me publish some of my research making it more available.

I have a lot of material to transcribe but these long days are not conducive to hanging over the computer for long periods. Short wills I could work at and maybe that is the direction I should move in. I need to do a list of names mentioned in wills for the Probate Database at the Guild so may look to do that first of all. Then I can get back to transcribing Blake wills. Once I finish all the Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills then I will publish them to PDF format and put them up on my website with downloadable links. I will then move to the county record office wills that I have also collected through the years.

Shall revisit this blog today and think about other items that I could accomplish with short periods of time available.

Downsizing memberships

I have decided to narrow my focus in genealogy and will downsize my memberships. This year I am eliminating The Surname Society both for myself and my husband. Although I was a founding member I am just too busy working on my Blake, Pincombe and H11 studies to continue involvement. I tend to work with my DNA studies at FT DNA for all three of these projects. I think it is approaching 74 years of age actually. I already receive so many emails and this will help to eliminate some of those.

I actually enjoy the emails that I receive about the studies with a few exceptions. I do not do anyone else's research unless it coincides with research that I am doing. I expect people to provide me with their tree back three generations and a DNA study if they are trying to fit into a particular line. I do not open attachments unless I have information on the attachment. I have lately received several emails to my one name account that are just an attachment with the word Blake in the email. I wrote back to this individual to request more information about the attachment but have not to date heard back. Consequently the attachment remains unopened.

Although my initial thought was to belong to these societies so that I could eventually deposit my research but I have decided to do as my predecessors with Pincombe and Blake have done and deposit my material at the Society of Genealogists. All of my information is electronic so easily passed and readily stored. The Newsletters which I produce will be available on my website for as long as it survives and I am putting a plan in place to keep it going for a while. Plus I plan to continue working on my studies so long as I can sit at a computer and keep typing.

And the downsizing continues

I always wanted to be more involved with the Society of one place studies and do have Bishops Nympton and Upper Clatford listed as my one place studies. However, it is a distraction from my transcription and so I decided that I would also terminate that membership and that will be next April. When the opportunity and time presents itself I can take up the mantle once again if my two favourite villages are available. I have visited both of them when we were in England and I have stories about Upper Clatford that my grandfather told me which makes that one even closer to me.

I am surprised at how freeing separating myself from these responsibilities has become. Another task that I have had for a long time online parish clerks for several parishes including Bishops Nympton and Winterbourne Clenstone. I have a few others but mostly I have stepped away from those others over the past 9 years that my husband has been ill. I shall consider letting these other two go although I have so many records for Bishops Nympton that it does seem a pity to step away from it. I shall consider that one very carefully. Everything that I have for Winterbourne Clenstone is online.

I have nearly 1000 emails in my inbox once again although everyone has been answered. I shall work away at getting back to less than 50 once again. A lot of them can just be reviewed/filed/discarded but I need to work through that process. I do not like to discard immediately and that gets me into trouble in terms of a full mailbox.

I already downsized my commitment at FT DNA with regard to administration of DNA studies. I am down to the bare bones there - Blake, Pincombe, H11, Hampshire, T_FGS, and T2. I do almost nothing with the T haplogroup studies these days. There are plenty of hands-on people there. That leaves me with just the four studies and probably a dozen emails a day with them although some days heavier than that.

I seldom have time to look at the Society of Genealogists' Website and that is something that I want to start doing. I would like to give them my Blake and Pincombe files eventually if they desire them that is.

Probate of Blake Wills

I have had a number of requests through the years (about 2013 I started to produce an index of the probate for Blake Wills (the transcriptions of which can be found in various blogs published by me over the past 14 years) as part of my contribution to the Guild of one-name studies) for the information which is available on the Probate Index to which I have contributed. I have produced over 4000 lines of entries thus far but these entries do not contain the surnames of the testator. I am going to add in that information to my files and eventually will put the entire file up on my webpage. I will likely create a hypertext link to the particular blog where the will is mentioned.

Some of the requests have come from people who have visited my Blake profile on the Guild site. Most of them do not  actually have access to that information as one must be a member of the Guild. As I continue to wind down in terms of memberships, I am considering making this information available on my website so that any Blake researcher can access the entry plus hyperlink it back to the pertinent blog. Mind you it will take me a while to create the database making that possible but as I work my way through the wills extracting the information for the next submission I will add in all of that information and when I get bored with whatever I am doing I will go back and do the same with the 4000 plus lines already available. It will be a huge file as roughly 50% of the names have been excluded.

That would certainly decrease my emails I am noticing as I work away at filing/deleting from my In Box. When people do write I generally extract the information that they want from my excel file and then refer them to the pertinent blog post. That takes me time and it would be so much quicker just to refer them to my webpage and the link to the Probate Index.

As I am working my way through the set of wills that I have not yet indexed I am being reminded that I had put all of my wills into the database and currently I am working on King family in the Andover Hampshire area as my King family was at Upper Clatford and I can trace back to my 4x great grandfather Thomas King but no ideas on the names of his parents. He left his will in 1762 but does not indicate anyone other than his son in law Joseph Blake.  I transcribed 16 King wills in that local area so the database is actually all my wills but the majority of them are Blake.

These wills are all available for purchase on the National Archives of the UK website:

 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/wills-1384-1858/

If you go to Kew then you can view them/download them free of charge.

Eventually I will write a program to permit searching of this rather large database but for the moment this is the latest set of data which I produced from my set of referenced blogs. Having completed the task of producing the probate, I will now return to transcribing the cache of wills that I have on hand for the Blake family.

Moving towards transcription once again

Just checking all the Blake wills that I have transcribed thus far to make sure I didn't miss any in the counties that I have completed. It also is a good check to make sure that I added the county label with Wills attached i.e. Cornwall Wills. I noticed that I missed one so have corrected that. It will make it easier for me to bring them all into an *.pdf later.

There are a lot of other surnames as I transcribed all of the ones that I found for my family lines that could be pertinent.

I shall have to decide the best way to publish them but can do that as I am transcribing the next set.

Will of John William Blake, Swan Inn, Orsett, Essex - The National Archives PROB 11/2055/320, probated 18 May 1847

John William Blake, the testator, died in the first quarter of 1847 at Orsett, Essex. He was buried 23 Mar 1847 at Orsett, St Giles and All Saints, Essex. He was 42 years of age. He is possibly the John William Blake living at Ingrave on the 1841 census listed as a shoemaker and not born in Essex. He was 35 years of age at that time and there are two shoemakers living with him 19 years of age. There is a marriage at Romford St Edward the Confessor, Essex 5 Oct 1841 between John William Brown Blake and Sarah Marlton (it is 16 kilometres from Ingrave to Romford). His father is listed as Henry Blake. Orsett is 7 kilometres from Ingrave. This was the only marriage that I found in Essex for a John Blake and Sarah searching on Free BMD.

There are a couple of trees on Ancestry looking at this couple but no further details.

Beginning with Blake wills from Kent

I have checked all the countries alphabetically up to Kent and will begin with this set of 26 wills. It feels very pleasant to be bad transcribing once again. It is two years since I regularly transcribed wills.

Wills will become the centerpiece of my research once again. I have given thought to the idea of putting the entire Probate Index on my website and having a sort function. For the moment I will gradually introduce the column with the hypertext link back to the pertinent will in my blog which I want in the probate indexes that I have already produced and add in all of the name references (Blake was left out in my submission to the Probate Index to the Guild of one-name studies as is their custom) and then I will simply publish the resultant list on my blog with a label that can easily bring them together for any interested researcher.

The label will be "List of Individuals in Transcribed Wills."

Sharpening up the gains from the Blake one-name study

When I first took on the Blake study in 2011 at the Guild of one-name Studies, I knew it would be a lot of work. At that time I did not clearly establish the gains that I hoped to produce from the project. Now eight years later these gains are starting to firm up and will continue to do so likely.

1. Produce a set of transcribed PCC wills for the Blake family with comments where I am able to find pertinent research materials to add to the transcription. I also have over a thousand wills from county record offices that I have been and will continue adding in as I work on each county.

2. Produce a Probate Index (initially I did have thoughts on this but the Guild of one-name studies started up a Probate Index and I have contributed over 4000 lines to the Index for Blake and other surnames) which will include an all-name index and a hypertext link to the pertinent will blogged on my site. Eventually I will have to rethink this but should not be too difficult to do a fix on the hypertext link back to the information now contained in the blog using pdfs.

3. Produce a set of Blake marriages from the registrations held by the GRO (index available on Free BMD). The Marriage Challenge facility at the Guild has been very helpful in that regard. I have on hand nearly 6000 marriages that have been acquired through these Challenges and I highly recommend to everyone asking me about benefits of the Guild that this is a very large one particularly if you do not live in England and have ready access to these records. Eventually I will produce files of the marriages, perhaps by Registration District, that I will blog with the information on the Blake individual in the marriage unless the marriage partner is a person of interest to my family research in which case I will add in any information that I have. There are nearly 30,000 marriages from 1837 to 1911 and I tend to concentrate on these marriages although do collect from the period after 1911 when the Marriage Challenge includes that information.

4. Produce a list of Blake families found on the 1939 Register. This is a new thought and I have not decided how to go about this particular index.

5. Extract information on the Blake families from the earliest records up to the mid 1500s. I have blogged information that I have accumulated thus far. I may try, as time permits, to produce an index of this material again using hypertext links but I may do this on my website since I am starting from scratch with this idea. I have hundreds of Blake records from this time period that I photographed at Kew in my visits there.

6. I will continue to respond to all Blake requests (had two yesterday actually where I was able to assist the individuals). I have had a number of emails over this past week that have had attachments of unknown source (often with Blake above the hypertext link and rather weird email addresses). I write back and request information on the attachment. I do not get a response to this request which is rather strange to be honest.

7.  A number of people do not agree with my thoughts on the early Blake families and certainly I appreciate any and all comments. I tend not to be outlandish in my thoughts looking strictly at the records that exist.

8. My own line of Blake was known to me since childhood. My grandfather Samuel Blake (born at Upper Clatford, Hampshire) talked a great deal about his Blake family. I was only eight years of age when he died but do realize that he was trying to get me (and perhaps us my siblings would have to speak for themselves) to remember the line back. He realized that living in Canada we would lose that knowledge of our ancestry. As I worked my way back I remembered the names right back to Joseph very well and then the rest was a mixed up memory of Johns, Thomas, William but I did recall Nicholas. With that information in hand and wills that were particularly helpful I appear to have taken this Blake line back to its roots at Knights Enham in the mid 1500s. I do have copies of the Andover Manor Records and Blake is clearly visible in these records back into the early 1300s.

My aim with this study at the Guild was not so much as to look at my own family but Blake in general and how it arose in England and where it arose initially and indeed in the long run how far back can I actually trace my Blake line. Since our yDNA line (kindly tested by my brothers), belongs to the "Deer Hunters" this line has been in the British Isles perhaps as much as 12 thousand years although most say 8 thousand years. My grandfather believed his family had always been in the area in which he grew up and that appears to hold in the records. However, he was quite clear that we are not related to the Somerset Blake family best remembered by their famous son Lord High Admiral Robert Blake nor are we related he thought to the Blake family at Pinhills/Calne/Quemberford. In the male line I think he is absolutely correct with regard to the Somerset Blake family but our ancient ancestor Richard Blake married a Jone Blake with Jone being of unknown lineage although some place her as having been descendant of the Calne Blake family. That is another interest of mine that rides along for the trip into the past.

Andrew Blake the testator was living in Deptford Kent at the time of the writing of his will. There was an Andrewe Blake baptized 23 Jun 1683 at Minehead, Somerset son of Robert and Ann Blake (Find My Past and search looked at 1690 +/- 20 years in England with the name Andrew (plus variants) and father Robert (plus variants). An interesting location and I do have a rather extensive tree produced by another Blake researcher detailing the Blake family in Somerset. However the four Andrew Blakes listed in that tree do not have father Robert and mother Ann. There are no marriages in that particular chart between a Robert Blake and an Ann.

Andrew does not list the ship that he was going to travel in which could have been helpful.

I will be a little late with the next Blake Newsletter as I am trying to hunt out a particular will or at least the contents of it.

Canada Day is the 1st of July and definitely I will not be at my computer that day. I have been working away at it for a few days but wanted to produce information on the Dorset Blake line coming down from the Somerset Blake line. That is Chart 6 of the Blake Pedigree Chart found on the Blake Museum at Bridgwater website.

1.    Blake Pedigree Chart – Blake Museum at Bridgwater, Somerset. This is a recent addition to their website: http://www.bridgwatermuseum.org.uk/

The Blake Museum has given me permission to put these charts in the newsletter and will look at Blake Pedigree Chart 6 in this Newsletter. The chart on the right hand side is referring to the Blake family found in Dorset. This Blake family is well documented with a number of wills that I have already transcribed and can be found on my blog (http://kippeeb.blogspot.com) . A search on the Label “Dorset Wills” yields 12 Wills and they are primarily for this Blake line located in the Blandford area. The line of interest in this case can be located at the top right of this chart noting John Blake married Mary Wilkins 20 Jun 1648 at Pitminster, Somerset. John was the son of John Blake and Elizabeth (unknown). This John was baptized 19 Jun 1597 at Pitminster son of William baptized presumably at Over Stowey (Richard, his younger brother was baptized the 2nd of Jan 1562 but the baptism for William does not appear in the register which commences 1558 so presumably William was baptized before the beginning of the register but having his younger brother baptized at Over Stowey does give the impression that William probably was as well) and Anne Blake. There are other Blake baptisms at Over Stowey in this time period (as well as marriages and burials). Parents of William were John (the elder) and Johan Blake with this John being the son of Humphrey and Agnis Blake. Neither of these marriages were available on the parish registers that I read through. Humphrey’s second son was Robert Blake and the grandson of this Robert Blake was Admiral Robert Blake. This is a well documented line and finding a couple of proven descendants would yield the yDNA line of this Blake family of Bridgwater Somerset.

22 May 1566 was baptized Robert Blake son of John Blake (younger brother to William Blake as well) at Over Stowey.

The Pitminster Somerset parish registers are on Ancestry and verifying the earlier records would be rather interesting. The records begin in 1542 and are available up to 1812 online at Ancestry as scans of the original parish registers.

William Blake and Anne (unknown) baptized the following children at Pitminster (they appear to be the only Blake family baptizing children at this time in Pitminster):

Grace Blake daughter of Will[ia]m Blake was baptized the 9th of February 1588/89
Eme Blake daughter of William Blake was baptized the 3rd of December 1592
William Black son of William Blake was baptized the 4th of July 1594
John Black son of William Blacke was baptized the 19th of June 1597
Anne Blaak daughter of William Blaak was baptized the 12th of October 1600
Richard Blaak son of William Blaak was baptized the 17th of April 1603

I could not find a marriage for William Blake and Anne. These are all the children that I found for this couple at Pitminster and indeed I did not find any other Blake baptisms up to 1610. However at 73 I am sure my eyes are not as strong as they were and will leave any such discoveries to the future. The B is quite distinctive though making it somewhat easier to find Blake (and its derivatives) in the Parish Registers.

Moving forward I wanted to discover if there were any baptisms for John Blake (baptized 1597) and his wife Elizabeth at Pitminster, Somerset (and I will also look at the marriage register when I locate it). There is now more than one Blake family baptizing children at Pitminster in the 1620s but I will keep to the line mentioned above. I could not find a marriage for John and Elizabeth.

Anne Blake was baptized daughter of John Blake the 7th of October 1624
William Blake son of John Blake was baptized the 24th of February 1626/7
John Blake son of John Blake was baptized the 1st of September 1629

John baptized 1629 married Mary Wilkins 20 Jun 1648 at Pitminster and baptisms for their children were found in the Pitminster Parish Records.

John Blake son of John Blake was baptized the 14th of August 1649
Malachi Blake son of John Blake was baptized the 24th of June 1651
Elizabeth Blake daughter of John Blake was baptized the 12th of March 1652/53
William Blake son of John Blake was baptized the 13th of February 1654/55
Sammuel Blake son of John Blake was baptized the 16th of December 1656
John Blake son of John Blake was baptized the 16th of February 1659

The Blake of interest in this family with regard to the Blake family found in Dorset was Malachi Blake. Malachi Blake was a dissenting minister (Presbyterian Minister at Blagdon) and was implicated in Monmouth’s Rebellion fleeing to London following the defeat of 1st Duke of Monmouth in 1685 otherwise James Scott (illegitimate son of King Charles II). Malachi Blake fled to London in 1685 under disguise. He had married Mary Mico (year and location unknown) and they had baptized some of their children at Pitminster. I have not yet been able to learn very much about their other children who are named by others as: Sarah, Mary and William. William left a will and I will enter it into this newsletter below Malachi, his brother.

John Blake son of Mr Malachi Blake was baptized the 8th day of February 1684
Malachi Blake son of Malachi Blake was baptized the 16th day of August 1687

Although other children are noted in various trees as children of Malachi Blake and Mary Mico I did not find any more children listed as baptized at Pitminster.

Fortunately Malachi Blake left his will likely probated at Taunton but not available on the National Archives UK site. It is included in a set of documents collected by another dissenting minister. I will attempt to see if I can get a print of the will as it would prove to be quite interesting. I do, however, have the wills of several of his children including his son Malachi who was at Blandford. John, the other brother of Malachi, I have not learned very much about him yet.

2.    Blake Surname Study – Progress: One Name Blake Study at the Guild of One-name Studies was originally undertaken by another researcher. In 2011, I became the researcher for the Blake-one-name Study at the Guild. There was already a pre-existing yDNA project run by Bill Bleak and he continues as the main administrator of the project. As can be seen below only 16 members of the study have completed a Big Y (SNPs testing for deep clade determination) making it virtually impossible to do more than has been done with some of the groups.

Project Statistics
Total Members                               190
Big Y                                                   23
Combined GEDCOMs Uploaded      12
Paternal Ancestor Information     130
Predicted Y-DNA Haplogroups     25
Y-DNA12                                       108
Y-DNA25                                         91
Y-DNA37                                         88
Y-DNA67                                         61
Y-DNA111                                         34
The task of managing these groups is large and I will gradually work away at converting them to the new standard of placing individuals by their deep haplogroup testing. I would recommend that all members join the relevant haplogroup project to learn more about your haplogroup.
This has changed very little in the past three months. I am finding it difficult to work with the R1b groups. I do not like to upset the original classification but will continue to study how I could modify these groupings. Any suggestions greatly welcomed.

3.    Blake autosomal DNA Study at FT DNA (Family Finder)
In some cases these are large matches and in other cases relatively small but that is the way with the inheritance of autosomal DNA. With each generation chunks of autosomal DNA can either be broken into smaller units or passed as a large chunk relatively intact. It is a purely random event. Due to privacy concerns it is not possible to produce a chart of the members who do have matches with other members of the group but each member is able to check that for themselves in their account. What would be helpful is adding a family tree to your account thus making it much more possible to find matching autosomal DNA cousins in your research.

4.    Andover, Hampshire, England Parish Registers (Baptisms – set 6)
Andover, Hampshire, England has often been said to be the “home of the Blakes” when I have been writing to people in Hampshire through the years. I would say that Calne, Wiltshire perhaps has a stronger hold on that particular title although there are a number of other areas in England where the Blake family has been for centuries. When I decided to transcribe the Parish Registers of Andover I was surprised to find that yes there are a number of Blake entries but there are far more Blake entries in Parish Registers in other parts of England as mentioned. In this issue, I will publish the baptisms for Blake in the Parish Registers. These records are taken from fiche which have scans of the original parish registers. The registers for baptisms begin in 1588 and have provided me with a lot of details on the Blake family in Andover in the late 1500s and into the 1600s/1700s. Eventually I hope to complete my project of transcribing these Parish Registers for St Marys Andover beyond the early to mid 1700s.
Baptismal Registers commenced in 1588 and I will start publishing these transcriptions for Andover.

Philadelphia Blake married Edward Willet 21 Jul 1757 at St Mary Magdalene Woolwich, Kent, England.

There is a record on Find My past for an apprentice to Anthony Blake where he was a master Caulker at Woolwich Yard, Kent. Dated 1763. There is a baptism at Deptford Kent 29 Oct 1732 for an Anthony Blake son of Anthony Blake. There is also a baptism for a Thomas Blake 28 Nov 1731 son of Anthony Blake. There is a daughter Ann Blake baptized 9 Feb 1734 daughter of Anthony Blake. There is a second female (unnamed) baptism 8 Feb 1735 daughter of Anthony Blake.

There was a marriage at Deptford, Kent 14 Jan 1731 Anthony Blake married Ann Wallis. There was an apprenticeship for an Anthony Blake in 1723 in the City of London with the Master being a Barber surgeon. The father of this Anthony Blake was Thomas Blake.

Interesting records but I did not really find anything to draw this material together into a particular Blake family.

Changes to Ancestry and an exciting find on 23 and Me

I like using Ancestry; I like their search engine as I can get lots of variety in spelling. I also like their DNA. I had settled into a pattern using DNA at Ancestry and their latest change certainly blew that up to put it mildly! But with a few more days of thinking about it I have altered how I look at Ancestry. I had been creating Excel charts to look at my matches for both my husband's accounts and my own accounts. I can see that I could stop doing that and put everything online in my charting. Of course one always wishes that they had started out with this idea but it is never too late to make revisions. It just takes time. I am using the groups function which I had pretty much ignored after it was brought it a few months back. The 24 colours for groups is nice but could be expanded to 32 just to give even more flexibility. I do have some matches that can clearly be linked back solely to one 3x great grandparents' sibling (and more than one of those).

Lately a new cousin came onto my 23 and Me account which has permitted me to verify my Chromosome 23 phasing for my grandparents. What a relief that was as I had rather thought it was correct but some items just did not fit. Reading comments on Chromosome 23 and regarding anything less than 20 cM match as "unsure" I gradually came to the conclusion that this Chromosome is very sturdy and can carry lengths through many generations. For instance this new length that I have (as does one of my brothers thus limiting the match to my mother's side) is 20.2 centimorgans. Although I do not know this individual; and she did not respond to my message, she is matching known Cheatle lines. Sarah Cheatle was my 3x great grandmother and she married William Welch. Their daughter Ann married Henry Christopher Buller. Then their son Edwin Denner Buller married Ellen Taylor. My maternal grandmother thus inherited from her father a blended Chromosome 23 which he had received from his mother Ann Welch and would include both Welch and Cheatle. This discovery very much confirms my phasing and places new emphasis on not using lengths of less than 20 cM to phase the 23rd chromosome. I do have several lengths that one might think would let you establish that a length had come from a particular ancestor. I have overlap with some of my mother's ancestors on her father's side and her mother's side in terms of location which had not really occurred to me until I started to phase the 23rd chromosome.

The other excitement on this Cheatle match is my inability to clearly link my Cheatle line with the other Cheatle lines at Ashby de la Zouch. With these matches I am now in the thought process that my William Cheatle married to Sarah unknown and baptizing my 3x great grandmother Sarah Cheatle at Ashby de la Zouch in 1795 likely married again in the early 1800s as these matches link back to a William Cheatle at Ashby de la Zouch but not to the mother of Sarah Cheatle.
